Water Stewards

October 31, 2021

Did you know that the water from your yard eventually makes it into the Wissahickon and that it becomes part of Philadelphia’s drinking water?!!  That is also true for the storm water that floods down the street into the sewers after a rain.  Anything that gets rinsed off your lawn or driveway, or that is in the street, contaminates the water in our local creeks, the Wissahickon and on down the line.  Plus all the runoff from our lawns contributes to local flooding both in our own homes and those of our neighbors.  But, there are simple things you can do to help decrease and clean this runoff:  Plant native trees, flowers and shrubs.  Avoid using unnecessary fertilizer or weed applications.  Decrease plain lawn by increasing amount of garden beds.  Install a rain barrel or downspout garden; plant a rain garden.  Water is a precious commodity but we often take it for granted.

What steps will you take to help control the water that runs off your property?  How can you help make our church property or our town properties more watershed friendly?
